Blinds for Your Home

Factors to Consider in Choosing the Right Blinds for Your Home

You have decided to go for the contemporary look for your home and are now in the process of purchasing blinds for your windows. However, with so many custom blinds and ready-made blinds to choose from, you are now confused on what type of blinds to buy. Do not worry; this article will serve as an essential guide in everything related to blinds.

Fitting Options and Measuring Up

You must first decide on your preferred fitting options. Fitting your blinds within the inside of the recess or blinds that stick to windows is ideal for small room windows with little wall space between and around them. Inside recess, fitting is also ideal if you are going to team your blinds with your curtains. On the other hand, larger rooms need to have the blinds fitted on the outside recess to block out more amounts of light.

  • For blinds that are fitted within the window recess, you should measure the entire height of the recess and the narrowest width of the recess. For blinds going outside the recess, it is important to measure the width of the recess then add 4 cm to each side. It is also important to add another 15 cm to the measurement of the recess’s height.
  • For the pulley and catch, it is better to decide beforehand which side to place them to have unobstructed access in manipulating your blinds.

Style of Blinds

While blinds can look fantastic in any room, the different styles of blinds may significantly alter the overall look of your room. Here are the most common styles of blinds to choose from.

  • Roller Blinds

These blinds roll up or down with the pull or release of a cord. Roller blinds can have two different fabrics on either side. Roller blinds provide a streamlined and contemporary look and are ideal for windows or glass doors that are frequently used.

  • Roman Blinds

Roman blinds are manipulated using a pulley system and are made from a flat piece of fabric and lining. When the cords are pulled, the bottom dowel of the blind rises to meet the next dowel above it until all the dowels are fully raised exposing the entire window. Roman blinds are ideal for formal room settings. You can have roman custom blinds by choosing your fabric with designs and prints.

  • Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds are composed of slats that may be made from wood, plastic, or metal. These blinds are ideal for home offices, kitchens, and bathrooms. Metal and plastic blinds are best suited for rooms that have high moisture levels while wooden blinds may be used for dry rooms.

  • Vertical Blinds

If you have the floor to ceiling glass walls, then vertical blinds are the best ones to install. The sections of a vertical blind move to the side when opened, so it is best to have the sections slide open into the inconspicuous side of the wall.

Material

Your choice of blind styles and materials should be dependent on the conditions of your room. For rooms that are exposed to high heat, Venetian blinds made out of aluminum or white wood materials are ideal for blocking out excess heat. Roller blinds with white or reflective material on the outer side are also great in keeping the area cooler during hot summer days. Rooms that are usually wet or have high moisture content should have non-fabric or non-wooden blinds such as plastic or metal.

All in all, your choice of blinds will be dependent on your needs to control light and your style preference.
