How to Run Your Restaurant Business Smoothly? 5 Easy Ways

The pandemic was a great eye-opener for most businesses, some taking a toll more than others. The restaurant industry was one of the most impacted during the whole Covid situation. Since they could not conduct any kind of operations during the lockdown, the revenue for most restaurants took a hit.

This made things quite complicated because most restaurant places are taken on lease, or are rented, so the rent was still having to be paid, causing huge losses. However, now that things are slowly getting back to normal in most countries, running a restaurant can be complicated, but if done the right way, quite rewarding as well.

Below, we have discussed how few restaurants still thrived and continued to make profits, even during the pandemic, and what you can learn from them.

  1. Emphasize Customer Feedback

Understand that you are in a service industry, and whatever profits you make, at the end of the day, are primarily dependent on the customers. Not on the property, not on the staff, not on the décor.

Of course, they all have to come together to make things happen, but your number #1 focus should be your customers. What can you do to make them happy? No one can answer this for you except your customers.

So, this is why customer feedback and reviews are so important. Every review, rating, or feedback by a customer counts and can guide you towards making some considerable changes in the organization.

  1. Make sure everyone knows their “JOB”

There will be a lot of people in your restaurant, and you must clearly define the job roles for each of them. You cannot let people overlap tasks, and confuse roles among each other as it will directly impact service. But how can you do it?

The simplest way of doing it is to assign tasks on the basis of their competence. List down all your tasks that should be done to ensure a seamless customer experience and distribute accordingly.

  1. Simplify your Menu

A lot of restaurants nowadays have started to become really creative and fancy with the items on the menu card, thinking that it looks attractive.

Yes, it does, but its benefits are only short-term. The truth is, most people visiting or ordering from restaurants don’t always enjoy adventurous dishes. So, keep some out-of-the-box food items but make sure you also have some comfort food on your menu.

  1. Motivate your team members

You as a leader are responsible for your entire team’s performance and must always keep their spirits high. Your team consists of everyone working in the restaurant, including waiters, staff, chef, and even security. All of them will be communicating with customers either directly or indirectly. Thus, if you keep them happy and motivated, they will keep your customers happy

Apart from motivation, discipline is equally important. Make sure you have discipline in your Cash Flow and Cash Management. One big reason why many big restaurants fail is because of poor liquidity, which is often a result of poor cash management.

Spend only where is necessary, and save wherever possible. Keep following this mantra at least until the first climb.

  1. Leverage technology and Online Ordering System

The only restaurants that managed to strive during the pandemic were the ones with an online ordering system. People are still afraid to come out in full for luxuries like eating outside and are still preferring to order.

Plus, you are eventually saving a lot more when someone orders food online rather than dining in. Further, tech has improved so much that you don’t even need to have delivery executive personnel within your restaurant. There are third-party delivery apps like Zomato and Swiggy, that help you do that.

In fact, Foodtech unicorn Zomato has delivered a total of 9.2 crore orders since March 23, 2020, and claims to have zero reported cases of COVID-19 transmission through food delivery, or through the food delivery agents. if you haven’t yet established an online ordering system, you are missing out on a lot already, and it is high time you do so.

Like I said at the beginning of the article, running a restaurant can be complicated, but if you do it right, you are sure to earn great rewards!
