Hand Sanitizers

How to Make Hand Sanitizers With the Best Natural Fragrances

Are you staying safe in 2021?

When Covid-19 swept across the world, we all got a wake-up call on our hygiene. Really, before the pandemic, who used hand sanitizer when they were out or wore a mask when they were sick? Not as many as now, that’s for sure!

Staying safe this year means limiting the spread of the virus as much as possible, and hand sanitizer plays a key part in that. But, if you’re sick of spending chunks of money on the stuff or you’re tired of smelling like a hospital ward, we have the answer; make your own!

Here’s how to create your own hand santiziers with natural fragrances that will keep the virus at bay.

Aloe Vera Hand Sanitizer

Aloe vera is known for its moisturizing properties and is super kind to skin. If the alcohol in sanitizers is drying your hands out, adding aloe vera should work to counteract that, keeping your hands supple and soft. You can also add essential oils of your choice to help fragrance your DIY hand sanitizer – check out these scented hand sanitizers for scent inspiration!

Here’s what you’ll need to make yours:

  • Aloe Vera
  • Essential oils
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Measuring cup
  • Bowl
  • Container for the sanitizer
  • Tablespoon

To make your scented sanitizer, mix together 1 tablespoon of isopropyl alcohol with 1 cup of aloe vera, blending thoroughly. Add around 5-10 drops of your natural fragrance oils and mix. If it doesn’t smell strongly enough of your essential oil, add a couple more drops!

Pour your mixture into a container and you’re good to go.

Sea Salt Hand Sanitizer

Okay, it might sound really weird to add sea salt to your sanitizer recipe, but trust us, it works! Sea salt is known for its antibacterial properties and is often used to help fight off infections, like after you have your ear pierced. Adding sea salt to your scented sanitizer will give it an extra bacteria-fighting kick.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Sea salt
  • Water
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Essential oil for natural scents
  • Teaspoon
  • Tablespoon
  • Measuring cup
  • Spray bottle
  • Pan with lid

Start by mixing 1/2 teaspoon of salt with 1 tablespoon of isopropyl alcohol. Add the solution into a clean spray bottle, along with 5-10 drops of your chosen essential oil. Next, distil the water.

To do this, fill your pot with water and bring it to a boil. Take the lid of your pot and turn it upside down, placing it on top of the pot. Add a few ice cubes to the lid and let them melt over the boiling water; this will be your distilled water!

Pour the distilled water into your spray bottle, adding little by little until you think your hand sanitizer is just strong enough without being overpowering. Spray away!

Witch Hazel Hand Sanitizer

Witch hazel is an amazing, natural ingredient that’s known for its healing properties and is a natural disinfectant. Add it to your recipe for a nourishing hand santizer that’s completely natural. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Witch hazel
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Aloe vera
  • Essential oil
  • Bowl
  • Measuring cup
  • Tablespoon
  • Hand sanitizer container

Mix two tablespoons of witch hazel with 1/2 cup of aloe vera, and 1/2 cup of isopropyl alcohol in your bowl. While witch hazel is a great disinfectant, it’s still a good idea to use alcohol for super germ-fighting capabilities! In fact, the CDC recommends always having hand sanitizers with an alcohol content of at least 60%.

Add essential oils, again around 8-10 drops. But, because witch hazel has quite a strong smell of its own, you need to be careful to pick a complimentary scent. Tea tree oil, sage, and thyme are all popular choices that should create a beautiful and natural scent.

Pour your mixture into a container, and enjoy!

Glycerin Hand Sanitizer

Glycerin is a super moisturizing ingredient that’s the perfect addition to hand sanitizers. If you keep an eye on your beauty products, you’ll probably notice glycerin in many moisturizers and face creams, and it’s loved by dermatologists! Add it to your hand gel for a more luxurious sanitizer.

Here are the ingredients:

  • Glycerin
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Distilled water
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Essential oils
  • Bowl
  • Measuring spoons
  • Measuring cup
  • Spatula
  • Pot with lid
  • Storage jug
  • Funnel
  • Hand sanitizer container

That’s a lot of items on the list, but it’s worth it for this luxurious hand sanitizer! To make yours, start by mixing 1 teaspoon of glycerin, 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide, and 1 cup of isopropyl alcohol in a bowl. If you want extra moisture, you can also add 1/4 cup of aloe vera to the mix, because why not, right?

Add essential oils now, going for around 8-10 drops. If you want a stronger fragrance, add more. If you prefer unscented products, simply skip this step!

Make your distilled water using the pot and pan method we showed your earlier (for the sea salt sanitizer). Add 1/2 cup of your distilled water to your mixture to thin out your sanitizer (glycerin is quite sticky so this is essential!). Pour your mixture into a clean, empty jug and leave to rest for around 72 hours.

Use a funnel to pour your sanitizer into your bottles after waiting the full time. Now, you’re good to go and can step out into the world knowing you’ll be safe from germs, bacteria, and viruses!
