How To Spot The Symptoms Of Mitral Valve Stenosis

Our heart is the most important organ in our body. Its main function is to pump blood throughout the body continuously. The Mitral valve is found in the middle of the left atrium and left ventricle at the upper and lower chambers on the left side of the heart. One of the major heart diseases is Mitral Valve Stenosis. This disease results in the contraction of the mitral valve at its opening. Mostly, it affects the normal functioning of a heart. One may experience tiredness, difficulty in breathing, and many other discomforts.

Mitral Valve Stenosis: Causes

  • Rheumatic Fever – This disease is found in children which causes inflammation in the heart, joints, and blood vessels. Rheumatic Fever is a severe form of Scarlet Fever or Strep Throat Fever. It is rarely seen in the countries that are developed and commonly found in the countries that are developing.
  • Calcium Deposits – The mitral valve is narrowed because calcium gets deposited here due to age. This causes many complications.
  • Congenital Heart Defect         In rare conditions few babies are born with a defective valve which can cause issues with time.

  • Radiation treatment

  • Electrocardiogram, it measures the heart’s electrical activity
  • Chest x-ray, it measures the size and shape of the heart
  • Cardiac catheterization is used to see the blood flow through the heart and arteries.
  • MRI scan uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create images of the heart.

Mitral valve stenosis can put pressure on your heart and decrease blood flow. If left untreated it can cause.

  • Atrial Fibrillation
  • Blood clots

Mitral Valve stenosis is a complicated heart condition. However, the symptoms are not well pronounced. In fact, in most cases, it takes years, even decades to show. This makes the Mitral valve stenosis a very serious medical condition. We should take extra precautions while dealing with it. Whereas, there are medical tests that can detect the presence of this condition. Hence, we must conduct regular medical checkups and follow good health practices.
