How you can help to keep your kids healthy

As parents, we always want to do our best for our children. Whether it is sending them to the best schools, getting them the perfect birthday gift, or taking them on a surprise trip to Disneyland, we want them to be as happy, healthy, and successful as possible. In this post, we are going to focus on health specifically and look at five ways in which you can boost your child’s mental and physical wellbeing.

1. Feed them a healthy diet

One of the most obvious ways to keep our kids healthy is through the food we give them. While it is ok to let them have candy or junk food very occasionally as a treat, the majority of the time, they should be eating a balanced diet with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Likewise, your child’s paediatrician will have asked you to swap sodas for water and avoid giving them too much salt. If you’re worried about making sure they get all the vitamins and minerals they need, you can always supplement their diet with kids vitamins with iron to be sure.

2. Encourage their hobbies

A large part of being happy is having some purpose in life. This might sound grand, but an easy way to achieve this is by having a fulfilling hobby. So do your best to get your kids away from the TV screen and trying out a range of different activities until they find something they love. It could be arts and crafts, music, writing, drama, sport… anything at all, as long as they can get passionate about it. If it is a passion you can share with them, even better!

3. Get them outdoors

Spending time outside is vital for children, and there are a number of reasons why. Being out in nature is also key for mental health, creativity, imagination, reducing stress, and appreciating the world we live in. Plus, it is fun! Running around in the woods, climbing trees, and building dens with their friends will all boost motor skills and ingenuity, plus create fantastic memories.

4. Keep them active

Being physically active is important no matter how old you are. Unfortunately, in the US, an estimated 19.3% of children between the age of 2 and 19 are obese. This is important because obesity can increase the risk of a wide range of health conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and breathing problems. By encouraging your children to play sports, run around outside, or take up other active hobbies such as dance, you can help them maintain a healthy weight and stave off disease.

5. Stimulate their minds

Mental health is just as important for our overall wellbeing as physical health and nurturing curiosity and learning in your children will pay dividends as they get older. So, encourage them to read widely, do puzzles and other mentally stimulating activities, and try having family conversations over dinner instead of watching television (alternatively, you could put on a documentary). They will thank you for it later!
