About Marine Anchoring Products – Parts & Accessories

What is Marine Anchor?

An anchor is a device, normally made of metal, used to connect a vessel to the bed of a body of water to prevent the craft from drifting due to wind or current. Boat Anchors can either be temporary or permanent.

Permanent anchors are used in the creation of a mooring, and are rarely moved; a specialist service is normally needed to move or maintain them. Vessels carry one or more temporary anchors, which may be of different designs and weights.

A sea anchor is a drag device, not in contact with the seabed, used to minimise drift of a vessel relative to the water. Anchors achieve holding power either by “hooking” into the seabed, or mass, or a combination of the two

Different Types Of Anchor?

There are loads of anchors, but for the most part, this is what you will find. We have sorted most of the common anchors into five major categories:

  • The Hook Anchor
  • The Plough Anchor
  • The Fluke Anchor
  • The Claw Anchor
  • The Scoop Anchor

Boat Anchor Rope & Chain

The main advantage of the anchor chain line is that it is the only and perfect means to avoid chafing of the anchoring on aggressive sea beds. Anchor rodes consist of a length of chain, rope or a combination of rope and chain that connects an anchor to a boat. The rope portion of anchor rodes typically consists of nylon three-strand, 12-strand or double-braid line.

Chain allows the anchor to set faster and more reliably by creating a downward pull on the anchor handle known as the shank. It helps the rode to lie horizontally once set, rather than be pulled upward and loosen the anchor. For most boaters, the best type of rope to use when anchoring is nylon, a synthetic. It is strong, holds up well to the weather and stress, and coils without kinking. Nylon has many advantages for anchoring offering good shock absorption, light and flexible.

Anchor Winch & Anchor Windlass

A windlass is a machine used on ships that is used to let-out and heave-up equipment such as a ship’s anchor or a fishing trawl. On some ships, it may be located in a specific room called the windlass room. The mechanical advantage of a windlass is derived from the pulling force being multiplied by wrapping the rope around the drum.

There are a number of important criteria to be considered in selecting the correct anchor winch. These include the vessel size, displacement, windage, anchor size and road selection. Practicalities such as locker space and depth of fall for the ride also play a part in deciding which windlass is ideal for you.

Bow Roller

A bow roller functions in much the same way as a bow pulpit, allowing you to keep your anchor permanently mounted on the front of your boat. The bow roller can be used for storing the boat anchor but it also makes retrieving the anchor by hand much easier

Your anchor roller must be compatible with your style and size of anchor to accommodate the shank of the anchor and to keep the anchor far enough away from the bow so the plow or claw of the anchor does not damage the bow when the anchor is fully retrieved and stored.

Marine Navigation Light & Anchor Light

Anchor lights are visible when a boat is anchored at night, and are a key factor in making nighttime boating both easier and safer. Marine Navigation lights are used to prevent collisions at night or in times of reduced visibility, and are an essential tool in keeping you and your vessel safe. Marine Navigation lights allow you to see other nearby vessels, and allow other vessels to see you.

Port sidelights are red, starboard sidelights are green and both shine from dead ahead to 112.5° aft on either side. Stern lights are white and shine aft and 67.5° forward on each side. All-round lights are white and shine through 360°. A 360-degree white all-around masthead light with two-mile visibility normally fulfills this requirement for most pleasure boats. If you only take your boat to a designated mooring and never plan on anchoring, then it is not necessary for you to use an anchor light.

Anchor Retrieval System

To retrieve the boat, move the boat directly over the anchor while pulling in the line. Pulling the anchor straight up should break it free. If the anchor is stuck, turn your boat in a large circle while keeping the anchor line pulled tight. When the anchor breaks loose, stop the boat and retrieve the anchor.

Anchor ring & anchor retrieval is designed for offshore applications where longer lengths of anchor chain are common. Anchor Ring must be specifically engineered to offer exceptional performance and value to boaters. Once you have used our Anchor Ring anchor retrieval, you will never want to go back to hauling your anchor by hand again.

Boat Cleats

Nautical boat cleats are mostly used to tie a boat to a dock. In home decor, boat cleats can be used as hardware, such as pulls for drawers and handles for cabinet doors. There are different types of boat cleats. Horn Cleat, S-Style Cleat, Flip-Up Cleats, Solar Dock Cleats.

While dock cleats are most commonly installed on wooden boat docks, they can easily be installed on concrete seawalls as well. Keep in mind that installation will require a bit more drill power than wooden docks. The cleat assemblies withstood simple tension loads of between 1,190 and 7,500 lbs.

Fairleads

A fairlead is a device to guide a line, rope or cable around an object, out of the way or to stop it from moving laterally. Typically a fairlead will be a ring or hook. fairlead is a guide for a mooring line which enables the line to be passed through a ship bulwark or other barrier, or to change direction through a congested area without snagging or fouling. The fairlead may be a separate piece of hardware, or it could be a hole in the structure.

The roller fairlead job is to make the wire rope glide smoothly back to the winch’s hub when engaged, extracting your rig out of nasty situation. Installing a winch fairlead helps your winch to work the way it should be. Fairleads reduce the lateral strain on your winch when you’re trying to do an angled-pull with the witch.

Anchor Bag

When choosing what size a nchor rope bag you need, you will want to make sure that it is made out of a UV mesh material. The Anchor Bag is a heavy-duty mesh bag designed to be used as an anchor. Mesh material allows water to pass through the material and withstand being outdoors in the elements its whole life or a good portion of its life.

Another thing to consider is to make sure that all other hardware on the anchor rode bag is made of stainless steel, aluminum or solid brass. To use the bag, just fill it with rocks and tie the handles together to keep everything inside. When not in use, the bag can be folded
