What is Astrology? A Guide In 2021

Astrology seems like a mystery to a lot of people and other people might see it as party tricks. So, what really is astrology? Are you interested in astrology? If you are, continue reading because, in today’s blog post, I’ll be telling you everything I know about astrology.

What is Astrology?

Astrology is defined as the study of the relative positions and the movement of celestial bodies interpreted as influencing the natural world and human affairs. In order words, we can say that astrology is the study of the connection between earthly events and celestial activity phenomena. A person who practices astrology is called or known as an astrologer.

The earthly events mentioned above includes your relationship, career, wellness insights in your monthly or weekly horoscope, etc. What happens in astrology is that professional astrologers do their best to interpret and explain how the current movements of planets are affecting your life based on the planet where you were birthed into. The movement of the planets can be used to predict social trends, current events, and even financial markets. Astrologers can also take an in-depth look at your personality and your compatibility with other people based on your birth chart (i.e., your personal astrology).

Astrology is the language of the sky and understanding the key building blocks of astrology helps in improving one’s self-awareness.

What do the planets mean?

Do you know that every celestial body in our solar system has or serves a purpose in astrology? I bet, you didn’t know.

When looking at your personal astrology, every planet or luminary (i.e., the moon and sun) can offer insight into different pieces of your life and personality.

Let’s quickly take a look at the basic symbolism for all the main planets, points in the sky, and luminaries.

Sun: It symbolizes or represents your self-esteem, confidence, identity, sense of self, and self-image.

Moon: It’s the emotional compass of the zodiac, shapes your sense of safety, values, security, and intuition.

Mercury: Known as the messenger planet that oversees communication, research, and information gathering.

Venus: It’s the planet of beauty and love which influences money, relationships, art, passions, pleasure, etc.

Mars: The go-getter planet. It has to do with your courage, energy, security expression, and how you take action.

Jupiter: Jupiter is known to be the planet of abundance and luck.

Saturn: This is the planet of boundaries, rules, discipline, and limitations.

Uranus: This is the planet of change, sudden events, rebellion, and breakthroughs.

Pluto: The dwarf planet is known as the planet of death, rebirth, transformation, and power.

North & South Nodes: The North & South nodes are mathematical points that are always opposite one another on a chart. The north node is known to act as the astrological north star, which is interpreted to be one’s karmic path (i.e., the path you are supposed to move towards in life) and the south node is what you are good at, due to your past life or early experiences.

Ascendant/Rising sign: Your rising sign, is the sign that was ascending on the eastern horizon during the time of your birth. It talks about the image you project into the world and it also offers insight into your talents, skills, and strategies you might end up adopting as a way of life.

What’s my birth chart and what does it mean?

Astrology signs are pretty common these days, you see and hear about them on dating websites, among your friends, and practically everywhere. When people talk about signs, they are referring to one or more of the 12 zodiac signs. So, if you are being asked what’s your zodiac sign? The person simply wants to know where the sun was when you were born. But astrologers do not use only that to tell your astrological story. Professional astrologers look at the entire chart which is also known or seen as a picture of the sky when you were born. What does that tell us? It means that two persons born on the same day, month, and year but at different locations and different times will have their own unique chart. The reason for that is the celestial bodies do move at different rates through the signs.

So if you do know the location and precise time you came into the world, you’ll be able to create your very own accurate snapshot of the sky at the time you were born. With that information, you’ll be able to cast what is known as your birth or natal chart. Your birth chart does not only illustrate the sign, the luminaries and planets were when you were born, it can also offer more insight into your astrological wiring, aspects, houses, and degrees. These days, if you don’t know how to do it by hand, computer software can help you cast it provided you know the precise time and location.

The zodiac signs are 12 in number and they are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.
