Colorado Rockies

Black is Back in Colorado

The Colorado Rockies won’t be a part of the World Series 2022, but there is hope that they will get back to that point in the near future. Colorado hasn’t been afraid to spend some money of late, but now they just need some of their big pickups to find a way to deliver.

Not long after the 2022 season came to an end, the Colorado Rockies announced that manager Bud Black would be back in 2023. It was important for the Rockies to come out and say that right away, as the Rockies went just 68-94 during the 2022 regular season.

The 94 losses for the Rockies were the most since the 2015 season, and it happened because of a lack of offense, even at Coors Field. Colorado scored just 4.31 runs per game this season, and that has cost hitting coach Dave Magadan his job.

Magadan has been with the Rockies since the 2018 season, and has plenty of experience throughout baseball. A lack of production from former MVP Kris Bryant is one of the top reasons that Magadan will no longer be with the Rockies moving forward.

Infield coach Stu Cole is another coach that will not be with the team in 2023, but he is still going to remain with the franchise. Cole has been with the Rockies franchise since 1995 and he is going to be getting a new job somewhere in the Minor League system.

LaRussa Retiring…Again

The Chicago White Sox were one of the most disappointing MLB teams in recent memory, and it was Tony LaRussa that ended up taking most of the blame. LaRussa was hand selected to manage this team, but it was a move that was immediately questioned when it was made.

Chicago was a big favorite to win the AL Central Division this season, but they just couldn’t play anything better than .500 baseball. LaRussa actually missed most of the final month of the year with a health injury, and that was the reason that he gave when announcing his retirement.

Before LaRussa came back to the dugout, he was working with Major League Baseball, and it’s unclear what he will be doing now. The Chicago White Sox are going to be conducting a large search for their new manager, and Miguel Cairo is going to get an interview.

Despite the disappointing season for the Chicago White Sox, this is still one of the most attractive jobs in baseball. There is a ton of talent on that roster, and winning the AL Central Division is something that isn’t extremely difficult to do.

There are always certain jobs that tend to set the market when it comes to MLB managers, and that should be the case in Chicago. It does help that the White Sox are also missing out on postseason baseball and can get the search started sooner.

Several Openings Available

Just like with any year, there are a ton of managerial openings throughout the league. Most of these positions are going to be filled by the end of November as teams will want to have their manager before free agency begins.

There are even some MLB Playoff teams that could end up firing their manager, but that doesn’t seem likely with the current field in 2022. The Philadelphia Phillies are one playoff team that will be searching for someone at the end of the year, as they fired Joe Girardi earlier in the year.

In fact, the Phillies job might be the most attractive in baseball based on what the Phillies were able to accomplish this season. Philadelphia has one of the most feared lineups in baseball, and the starting rotation has been terrific this season as well.

Joe Maddon was fired by the Los Angeles Angels earlier this year, and that is another job that is going to be open. The Toronto Blue Jays are another team that was able to make the playoffs after firing their manager, and that is another job that might be attractive to some of the top coaches as well.
