What is green procurement? It’s the practice of obtaining goods and services through sustainable means.

For example, you can begin by looking at local suppliers. Then, ensure that goods are made in a sustainable fashion, are recyclable, or made from recycled materials, and aren’t packaged too wastefully.

2. Use Less Water

It’s a no-brainer — cut down the amount of water you use!

The last few years have been drier than usual, so water rationing has been put in place in various areas anyway, but there are other reasons to reduce water use too.

Doing so can be as simple as fixing leaks and dripping taps, while you can also put in place faucet aerators and low-flow toilets too.

3. Reduce Your Energy

Along with water, you can use less energy too. From lighting to temperature control and powering appliances, we can use an awful lot of energy without even realizing it, so it’s great to reduce your usage where you can.

Consider home solar installation and other high-efficiency practices. Can you upgrade your insulation to something more eco-friendly, or even make sure to turn off appliances and plugs when not in use?

4. Use the Cloud

You may well already utilize cloud computing, but if not, you should definitely consider it, or move even more onto the cloud.

From Google Apps to Microsoft Office 365 and Apple iCloud, there are numerous platforms to use. Not only will they benefit your employees and in turn your business as they can access information and work from anywhere, but they’ll reduce everything from travel and printing to carbon emissions too!

5. Reuse and Recycle

Do you find yourself using too many disposable coffee cups and similar? Between us, we can produce an awful lot of waste thanks to single-use products like these, so it helps to turn to reusable products where we can.

Are employees able to bring their own mugs and cups from home, or bring refillable water bottles? Can you use hand dryers instead of paper towels?

Place some recycling bins around the business too — if recycling is easy, people won’t be tempted to throw recyclable waste into the main bin.

6. Work With Likeminded Companies

If there are other businesses local to you that are trying to become more eco-friendly too, why not work with them?

If you both need the same product or service, you can buy in bulk to reduce waste and packaging, or share ideas for environmentally friendly business solutions — working together can make matters a whole lot easier.
