Cakey Makeup

How to Prevent Refresh and Fix Cakey Makeup

We have all been there – we have most likely at least once in our lives experienced cakey makeup. It may look fine initially, but as you reach the end of your makeup routine, your skin is now looking patchy and splotchy. If you only have a few minutes before you leave the house, this is every makeup user’s nightmare! So here’s a guide on how to prevent, refresh, and fix cakey makeup.

What is Cakey Makeup?

Cakey makeup is categorized by makeup, particularly of the base which consists of foundation, concealer, and powder, that is too noticeable, i.e too thick. Creases and lines are formed on the skin, making it look cracked and dry (because it is!).

How You Can Avoid and Prevent

The most probable number one cause of cakey makeup is dry skin! Invest in a good skincare routine before you put on makeup and after when you remove it. Ensure that you do your skincare prep before you put on your makeup so that you have a smooth base for foundation application.

After moisturizing your skin, do not forget to put sunscreen on! After putting on all of your skincare products, wait at least 5 minutes for it to absorb into your skin before you start applying makeup.

The key thing about your skincare prep before makeup is that you should use products that are suited to your skin type – so if you have oily skin, products that can help mattify your skin may be beneficial. For dry skin types, hydrating products are the best option for prepping your skin.

Primer is optional, but definitely a wise choice if you want to minimize pores and create a smooth canvas for your foundation. However, if you truly want to prevent cakey makeup? You need a setting spray! A prep set glow mist or any other setting mist is perfect for giving you that extra glow and even setting and hydrating your makeup look.

How to Refresh and Fix Cakey Makeup

If you have already applied your makeup and you can see that it is starting to look cakey, don’t worry! Here are some useful tips on how to refresh and fix cakey makeup:

  • Blend and blend some more – if you can see your makeup beginning to crease, then it is time to go back to blending. I hate to say it but it’s for your own benefit – your makeup may be looking cakey because you just didn’t blend well enough. Take a damp beauty sponge and dab, dab, dab!
  • Mist spray – a hydrating mist is a necessity in your handbag to refresh your makeup and stop your skin from drying out often.
  • Dab a little bit of oil – literally just a little bit of oil dabbed onto the dry areas of your face at the end of your makeup routine can help make your skin look more like skin and less like a cake.
  • Blotting sheets – blot those patches of excess oil with blotting sheets, designed specifically to remove excess oil and makeup that lead to that cakey appearance.
