How to Remove the Smell of Smoke

Smoke leaves an unpleasant smell clinging on the walls and can even build soot with time. To some extent, the smoke smell can be strong, making it quite stubborn to remove. However, you don’t need to do away with or replace the items that have been affected. Several remedies can help do away with the smoke smell, which includes;

Using baking soda

Baking soda is one of the most effective odor absorbers widely used today. If your room or premises is affected by smoke, try sprinkling liberal amounts of baking soda over all your furniture, household items, or floors. You can also leave a few bowls of baking soda in a room affected by smoke for several days. The solution will absorb the odor, and with time your room will smell well and create a conducive environment where you can leave and work in it comfortably.

Use of Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal contains carbon molecules responsible for chemically trapping smell, clearing it from the air. You can use it as a deodorizer agent to naturally absorb smoke odor. Home improvement centers have a wide range of activated charcoal products in most cases. The products are packaged in small fabrics that are labeled to indicate they eliminate smoke. To ensure the smoke odor is eliminated, you must place several bags of activated charcoal in the affected room or place. Within a given period, the charcoal will absorb the smoke. However, it is necessary to know that setting the charcoal directly on the fabric is highly likely to mess the place with stains.

Use vinegar

Vinegar is a non-toxic household staple that works perfectly to neutralize non-pleasant smells. The product has been widely used on surfaces and fabric nowadays since it is not harmful. Smoke molecules have a high PH that is reduced by vinegar due to its low PH levels. Putting vinegar in a bowl and placing it in the smelling space overnight will produce positive results. For speedy results, you can heat the vinegar to boiling and allow it for some time to simmer. The steam will waft in the air, and the smoke smell will be neutralized in the process.

Allow fresh air in

In warmer weather, you need to leave your doors and windows open as much as possible. Fresh air is critical in dissipating the smell of smoke with time. This is one of the natural means you can utilize to eliminate the smoke odor without leaving any side effects on your items.

Use of Ozone Generators

Ozone generators are products in the market that may help in reducing or instead eliminating smoke odor in any premises. The products will absorb the chemicals that cause smoke to smell, and with time, your house will smell free from any smoke intoxication. However, it would be best to be careful as excessive use of these products may not eliminate the smoke.  In other words, you may combine these products with another chemical such as vinegar and increase your room aeration to eliminate the smell in your room.
