It Gets Your Back Up: 5 Common Causes of Back Pain

The World Health Organization states that 60-70% of the population in developed countries will experience significant back pain in their lives. It is a chronic problem that too many people are living with.

Why do so many people suffer from back pain? Well, because there are lots of common causes of back pain.

Let’s take a look at what those are so you can be mindful of the causes of back pain to avoid long-term issues.

1. Strained Muscles

Many people who already have back problems know that they are one awkward bend or sudden twist away from lying on the couch for a few days.

That is because they have overstretched or put too much pressure on their spinal ligaments over a period of time. Lifting heavy objects, repetitive movements, or sports-related injuries can all cause strained muscles.

Serious ligament injuries can take from six months to a year to heal, but some have reoccurring problems for life.

2. Unhealthy Posture

Bad posture is a huge problem in today’s society thanks to the growing number of office workers and is one of the most common causes of back pain. People who slouch forward put an undue amount of pressure on their shoulder blades and push down their back muscles.

Those who feel pain in their lower back are not sitting up straight. Or, they have an office chair that does not have an ergonomic design. Your spine has a natural ‘S’ shape and it is important to sit in a chair that supports this shape.

Sitting in one position for long periods of time is another cause of back pain. If you work in an office, be sure to get up from your desk every 30 minutes. Even a short walk around the office will help lower your chance of developing back pain.

3. Disc Problems

Discs sit between the spine vertebra (bone) to protect it from shock and allow it to move.

As with strained muscles, repeated lifting of heavy objects can cause disc problems. Obesity, lack of exercise, genetics, and a slipped disc due to an injury can also cause disc disease or disc problems.

If your spine problems are due to a slipped disc, a y strap chiropractor could help.

4. Osteoarthritis

This is the most common form of arthritis. It often occurs due to injury, genetics, old age, or obesity. What happens is the cartilage between the joints wears away, causing pain and swelling between joints.

It can occur in the hands, hips, and knees but is also one of the common causes of back pain. Consult your doctor if you think you might have osteoarthritis.

5. Nerve Compression

Nerve compression is also known as a pinched nerve or nerve impingement. It occurs when the nerves receive pressure from the surrounding bones, muscles, and tendons.

If you feel a tingling sensation, numbness, or weakness in your back, you could have a pinched nerve.

These Are the Common Causes of Back Pain

There are several common causes of back pain but you can avoid most of them. With regular movement, a healthy diet, and good posture you are more likely to live free from back pain.
