Online Resource Guide for those Learning Arabic for Beginners

Whether you learn Arabic online, in a traditional classroom, or even from one of the Arabic language learning apps, as a beginner at learning the Arabic language, you’re probably going to want to supplement your Arabic learning  at some point with other techniques that will allow you to master the language. With that in mind, we’ve created this list of online resources to aid you in the learning process. Look through it and see which ones will be helpful for you and your personal learning style.

Arabic Grammar Resources

Acon:  a free online verb reference tool that automatically conjugates verbs

Fun with Arabic:  This site bills itself as a “fun and easy way” to learn Arabic alphabet skills. It also teaches the essentials of grammar in a simplified way.

Speak:  an easy to navigate website that teaches the Arabic alphabet and basic grammar lessons.

Vocabulary and Flashcard Resources

Al-Jazeera Learning Arabic: This is an Arabic language learning tool launched by Qatar-based news outlet Al-Jazeera that features lessons in Arabic from beginner to advanced levels.

Anki: Anki is an interactive flashcard program where users can create different flashcards. The program keeps track of how well you’re remembering  Arabic based on different topics like 4000 Common Words English-Arabic(which is a pretty decent word bank).

Arabic Webcasts: A  great resource for practicing your Arabic listening skills through webcasts and their scripts.

Aswaat Arabiya: Aswaat Arabiya is the penultimate source for Arabic listening materials. Taken from television stations of Arabic speaking countries in the Middle East, the resources available on this website offer a wide variety of topics and genres along with complementary activities intended for everyone from Beginner to Advanced.

KaleelaKaleela is both a website and an Arabic learning app that you can download to your Android or IOS mobile device. The app is  tailored for non-native speakers and focuses on the five skills of learning: reading, writing, speaking, listening and culture for those who want to learn Modern Standard Arabic, learn Egyptian Arabic and other Arabic dialects like Levantine Arabic and Fusha, or Classical Arabic.

 Lingua.ly: This is a Google Chrome extension that helps you learn vocabulary while  browsing the web. Simply double-click on a word and Lingua.ly will both translate the word and create a wordlist of the vocabulary you’ve learned.

Memrise:  Memrise uses flashcards integrated with mnemonic devices to help you easily and quickly remember Arabic vocabulary.

Omniglot:  Dives a little deeper into written and spoken Arabic  and especially helpful with for the Arabic alphabet and pronunciation.

Oxford First Arabic Words: Listen to pronunciation of words by hovering over the text or picture at this interactive site for the book that’s helpful for those who want to learn to speak Arabic or learn to read Arabic.

Digital Dialects:  Interactive games to learn basic Arabic vocabulary.

Doha Film Institute: Arab films for listening practice

The Arabic Student: Collection of  an American student of Arabic media collected by an to help intermediate to advanced students with mainly dialects

Reading Resources Resources

Children’s Library (Arabic): Free selection of online children’s literature in Arabic.

Hans Wehr’s Disciples: A collection of  the readings and translations of calligrapher/linguist Josh Berer covering all levels of difficulty and a variety of genres with related vocabulary and grammar.

Nizariat: A collection of Syrian poet Nizar Qabbani’s  poetry and prose from, along with biographical information on the poet himself.

Princeton Online Poetry Project:  This website offers the opportunity to listen to a native Arabic speaker read a small collection of translated Arabic poems.

Dictionary Resources

Lexilogos: The Dictionary of Dictionaries! Simply type in the word that you’re looking for and this search engine will find the right dictionary for the word you’re looking for.

Culture and Dialects Resources

Arabic Multimedia collection: This is an online resource for both Arabic teachers and students offering interactive learning and multimedia applications to further the understanding  and the appreciation of the Arab culture, language, arts, culture, music and history.

Egyptian Arabic Dialect Course: An online course designed to introduce Egyptian Arabic using examples and vocabulary from Egyptian song lyrics.

Friends of Morocco:  offers lessons in Moroccan Arabic

LangMedia: Collection of videos  that can be used in elementary and intermediate courses.

Music Layoonak: The largest Arabic music blog featuring over 800 songs with translations from more than 175 artists from all over the Arabic-speaking world.

West Michigan University: The WMU collection offers texts and audio to learn Arabic language skills based on Arabic culture.

News Resources

BBC News: Up to date news in Arabic.

NCLRC:  News since 2010 presented in MSA with exercises based on written and audio texts.

Online Newspapers: Online newspapers from different Arab countries.

Tunein: Listen to radio stations from anywhere in the world  including Arabic speaking countries.

Keyboard Resources

Gate2Home:  Type in Arabic  with this inline Arabic keyboard.
