Need to Do Before Moving Out

Things That You Need to Do Before Moving Out

If done right, moving from one home to another is very simple and quick. If you don’t organize the process properly you will be left worrying about what you have and what you don’t have, and it will make the entire process very difficult. Once you have moved, it may be tough to get going again and for weeks or even months. You will be facing challenges just because you didn’t organize the move when you had the time to. Here are a few things you can do to make the process as efficient as possible.

1.  Organize Your Belongings

Get a good head start, ideally at least 8 weeks prior to the moving date. This will give you enough time to not only take inventory of all the things you don’t need, but it will give you enough time to sell what you no longer want to carry around. If you don’t want to sell them, then clean and neatly package what you don’t need and give it to someone else who does. There are plenty of services that will happily take your belongings and donate them.

2.  Depersonalize The Space

If you’ve made serious changes to the place in any way, shape, or form, these all need to be reversed. When you move out, the space should be in the same condition as it was when you initially moved in, if not better. It’s helpful to research different reliable move out cleaning services that can help you deep clean and restore the space you’ve been living in for years. Get into all the nooks and crannies and get your personal belongings out. Things like receipts, passport-sized photos, and old CDs are easy to misplace and often overlooked when you are rushing to clean up a home.

3.  Prepare For The Move

Think about how you are going to manage the move itself. Are you transporting all your belongings yourself? Are you putting them in storage? Are you flying there and getting everything shipped? These are questions that are going to dictate how you actually move your things and how you plan the process. In the case that you are getting a storage unit for your things, you want to have enough time to complete that process first and then start packing for your move. If you are hiring a moving company then look into the different options and see what will work best for your situation.

4.  Arrange Your New Home

Before you get to your new home you want to get things ready. Basic things like getting in touch with the local utility companies, having the house/apartment opened and cleaned, and getting the fridge and air conditioning in running order should be handled prior to moving in. The last thing you want is to get to a house that is not yet inhabitable and you have to spend a night, or multiple nights, at a local hotel with all your belongings.

The sooner you can start to plan for the move, the better it is. Many times you will come across things that you didn’t expect and they will take time to get sorted out. For instance, applying to have your utility connections cut off and winding up all your paperwork at your current location can take a while. Similarly, setting things up at the new home can also take time. Give yourself at least a couple of months to make arrangements, rather than doing it all in a hurry when you only have a few days left for the final move.
