Top 3 Tips for University Freshers

University years are supposedly the best years of your life and, given that it’s the start of a new chapter – and probably your first shot at independence – it’s clear to see why.

But being broke, knackered, snowed under with uni work, and constantly hungover isn’t so fun. And the last thing you want to be doing is juggling a part-time job with lectures and assignment deadlines or attending nights out when you can barely afford a loaf of bread.

Don’t get us wrong, you’ll be faced with your fair share of challenges when you go to uni – and finding student accommodation in Liverpool is certainly one of them. But we thought we’d share a few top tips to ensure that you have the best experience whilst studying for your degree.

So, let’s get started.

  1. Make the most of your student accommodation

This will be your home for the next nine months (or more), so it’s only right that you want to get to know your housemates and make it feel homely. Simple things like displaying photos of family and friends, draping fairy lights around the room, and adding a fluffy throw to your bed are sure to give your student accommodation a more cosy vibe.

Be mindful though, there are strict instructions on what you can and can’t do to your room in the tenancy agreement. Consider using Command strips to hang things on the walls to ensure there are no holes or marks and to save you the wrath of your landlord.

  1. Learn how to budget

Let’s be honest, how many students aren’t skint during their university years?

But the truth is, taking a little time to work out a budget – ensuring you have enough to cover the monthly rent (and utilities if they’re not included), food, essential items like soap, loo roll, shower gel, cleaning products, etc. – will prevent you from being permanently out of pocket.

It’s also worth planning your meals. This way, you can do a big food shop, once a week, with a few dishes in mind (including meals that you can batch cook and stow in the fridge or freezer for another day).

  1. Know when to call it a night

If your student accommodation is just a stone’s throw away from the city’s nightlife, it would be rude not to go on a few nights out – we get it. But it’s easy to get carried away.

“Just a few drinks” can quickly turn into several drinks. And before you know it, you’re rolling in at 3 am and nursing a hangover from hell. The trick here is to not give in to peer pressure and never let FOMO rule you.
