How to Register to be an Organ Donor

Organ donation has been a subject of debate for many years. Some people are not comfortable with the idea of being an organ donor, while others believe that it is a great way to save lives.

What is an Organ Donor?

If you are considering becoming an organ donor, you should know that there are two main types of donation: whole body and organ donation. Whole body donation means donating all of your organs, tissues and bones after death. Organ donation means donating only some of your organs or tissue after death.

Whole body donations can be used for medical research and education purposes. Donating your body to science allows science to continue making significant advances in medical research and technology. Medical schools and hospitals need a constant supply of human organs for their training programs and patients. The demand for these organs is so high that there are not enough organ donors to meet the needs of these institutions.

Organ donation can also be used to help the families of accident victims who need transplants by providing them with donated parts such as skin, bone or heart valves. This type of donation is also helpful for soldiers who have sustained injuries in combat.

Organ donation is a selfless act, which can save the lives of many people. If you want to become an order donor, follow these simple steps:

Speak with Your Family

It is important to talk with your family about becoming an organ donor. Although it may seem like a relatively simple thing to do, it may become more complicated than you might think.

Talking with your family about your wishes and discussing what you want them to do if you die allows yourself and your family to have a peace of mind that your wishes are being fulfilled. If you don’t have any family, talk with someone else who you trust.

Register with Your Local DMV

In the United States, there is a shortage of organ donors. A person can register to donate their organs when they get their driver’s license. The DMV uses your driver’s license number to check your status as an organ donor.

To register as an organ donor with the DMV, visit their website and click on the “Register to be an Organ Donor” link. You will need to provide your driver’s license number and birth date in order to complete the registration process.

Tell Your Doctor

Finally, tell your doctor that you want to be an organ donor when he or she sees you next time. You will want to discuss your organ donation wishes, ask them about what organs you are willing to donate and which organs you would not be willing to donate.

For example, if you have a heart condition, then it is likely that you would not be able to donate a heart. If you are unsure about any of your organ donation wishes, then it is best to speak with your doctor and make sure that your wishes are documented in case anything were to happen.
