1.     The constellation of Leo, which dictates the attributes of the Leo zodiac sign, is one of the earliest discovered constellations. The constellation of Leo was documented by many civilizations such as the Mesopotamians in around 4000 BC! This might be due to the fact that this constellation has very distinct features which actually somewhat resembles its namesake animal, the lion. Most other constellations come nowhere near the shape of their namesakes. It is also one of the most recognizable constellations in the sky due to it being pointed out by the Big Deeper in the Ursa Major constellation.
2.     The lion representing the Leo zodiac has mythological elements to it as well. Did you know that the ancient Egyptians revered and worshipped a goddess named Sekhmet who had the head of a lion? It is said that the Sphinx, in Egypt, resembles the Lion turning into the goddess. The lion appears in Greek mythology as well.
