True Beauty Has A New Face With This Kdrama

Makeup tutorials are one of the first videos to go viral in the early days of the internet. Everyone just wanted to post how they do their everyday makeup or how to get ready for a glam night. As beauty trends developed, so did these videos. Former viewers became makeup masters, and so many others followed. So many makeup gurus everywhere swear that they can help you transform yourself into your best self. Imagine a makeup tutorial mixed with a Cinderella story premise, and you have True Beauty.

The protagonist is I’m Ju-Kyung, a high school student who loves reading scary comics and listens to heavy metal. She’s very self-conscious about her looks, like many girls her age. However, her whole life, she’s been made to feel bad about her looks by her own family and peers. All the insults and harsh words have made her develop low self-esteem and made her believe that she’s ugly. However, she discovers the power of makeup and transforms herself into a goddess before moving to her new school. There are no fairy godmothers in this story, but online makeup gurus are here to save the say.

Her world is turned upside down when she gets the hang of doing makeup and gets noticed for her Beauty for the first time. People in her new school started admiring her and actually called her a goddess, in the sense that her Beauty is surreal. As her character develops, she learns that Natural Beauty isn’t about putting on makeup. It’s about finding the Beauty from inside her. She realizes that it’s more important than any makeup techniques she could ever learn. I’m Ju-Kyung encounters colorful characters that help her natural Beauty is more than skin deep.

True Beauty will tug on your heartstrings and make you look back on your days as a teen going through so many physical and emotional changes while growing up. I’m Ju-Kyung’s development not just in looks but also in how much she learns to love and value herself is inspirational for those fighting with the same dilemma. This show is very relatable for many people trying to navigate life in this very superficial world that gives too much value to how you look. It’s a good pick-me-up show that will make you realize how great life can be if we stop paying attention to insignificant things. Life was very tough on I’m Ju-Kyung, but her will and determination to change the course of her destiny are very inspiring.

So many people struggle with having low self-esteem issues which would usually result in extreme measures to fit into unrealistic beauty standards. A lot are guilty of falling victim to the pressures of being perfect and beautiful when we were younger, and this KDrama has captured those emotions.

True Beauty is the live-action version of the webtoon known with the same premise and title. It was released in 2020, and it has been recently confirmed that season 2 is in the works.
