Comparing Two R&B Legends: R. Kelly And Avant

R&B artists have many things in common, and they often influence each other’s style and rhythm. R. Kelly is a well-known R&B legend, with a lot of controversy associated with his name. On the other hand, Avant has gained quite a lot of fame but very little controversy surrounding him. Let’s take a look and compare these two legends of rhythm and blues. 

Lawsuits, Pedophilia, And More

1. Kelly has been subjected to multiple lawsuits throughout his career, the most recent being his trials for racketeering, child labor, sexual exploitation, pedophilia and much more. This is certainly a contrast to Avant because the most anyone can say about him is that there is a significant change in Avant fat levels (he’s lost a lot of weight). R. Kelly is significantly more famous than Avant, and according to statements by Avant himself, R. Kelly has influenced a lot of his music. When it comes to actions outside the scope of music, it seems they have nothing in common. 

For example, it has recently come to light that R. Kelly married the late singer Aaliyah when she was just 15 years old. Her fans have always suspected this but there was no substantial proof of this. However, the recent trial has shown that she was pregnant by R. Kelly, and that he bribed someone to get her a falsified birth certificate so that the marriage certificate would say she is 18 years old at the time, which was not true. This is not even the most controversial accusations that have been pointed towards him during the ongoing trial. He has been accused of rape, even of sexually exploiting men. 

Avant’s Health Issues

In comparison, it seems that Avant leads a very wholesome life. He is happily married, even though his wife doesn’t make as many public appearances as you’d expect. The most controversial topic related to Avant are his health issues which caused him to lose a lot of weight suddenly. Apparently, he suffers from a disease known as Lupus (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) which is an autoimmune disease with no known cure. There are many symptoms of the disease, and quite a few are very debilitating. Nonetheless, he has taken steps to mitigate the effects of the disease. Most notably, he claims to have switched to a vegan diet for this specific purpose. 

Does Fame Mean Scandal?

Because R. Kelly is more famous, one might argue that the controversies attached to his name are only so due to his fame. However, Avant is still considered to be fairly famous and he hasn’t been mentioned in the MeToo movement like R. Kelly, Bill Cosby and many other famous people. Is it a function of their fame or were they always bad people? There is no definitive answer, because they might have not been so famous had they not had the personality that also makes them do bad things that society does not find acceptable. Nonetheless, in the age of the internet, there’s hope that celebrities will try to be more careful about their activities.
