How to Choose the Best Moving Company

One of the most critical aspects you need to consider when moving house is actually getting your stuff safely from one house to the other! It’s a time-consuming job, and moving heavy furniture is tricky. For this reason, many people opt to work with a professional moving company when they move.

However, working with a moving company isn’t without its issues either. What if they turn up late, damage your stuff or overcharge you? There are several checks you can do before hiring a mover to make sure you get a good one.

Work out what you want

The first thing you need to do is work out exactly how much of the heavy lifting (pardon the pun) that you want your movers to do.

Do you want movers to come in and pack up all of your possessions, load them onto a van and take them to your new place? Or would you rather pack yourself and just let the movers do the heavy lifting and driving for you?

A lot of moving companies will provide either service, but obviously if they are packing for you they are likely to charge more. Some people also don’t like the idea of strangers packing up their personal possessions. However, it does save you a lot of time and hassle, so which option you go for is really dependent on your personal preferences.

Get referrals

Word of mouth is absolutely priceless when you’re looking for a reliable mover. Reach out to family members, friends and friends of friends who have moved recently and ask them about their experience with the moving company that they used.

You can even make use of social media for this. A lot of areas will have community groups on Facebook for example, which you can post in to ask for advice.

Get in-person estimates

It’s a very good idea to get estimates from multiple movers so that you have a better idea of whether or not the price they are quoting you is fair.

Be sure to get the movers round to your home for a quote, rather than applying for one online. Seeing your home and getting an idea of how much stuff you have is the only way that they can give you a realistic price, and you don’t want to find yourself with unexpected extra charges.

Plus, this is a great opportunity to meet the movers and form your own opinion on their trustworthiness.

Verify the company’s license

You can verify that a company is properly licensed and insured through the FMCSA, which protects you and your possessions.

Trust your instincts

When the mover visits you to give their estimate, you can use this as an opportunity to work out how reliable they are. Some things to look out for are:

  • Do they turn up on time? If they don’,t this could be an indicator of poor time-keeping, which you don’t want to have to deal with on moving day.
  • Make sure that they are prepared to provide you with an estimate for the cost in writing, and that they have a contract in place for the move itself.
  • Gauge their pricing. Prices that are too high are a worry, but so are prices that are too low as they may try to sneak in ‘extras’ later on. Make sure you know exactly what their price covers, and what it doesn’t.
  • Don’t pay up front. You shouldn’t have to pay a mover until the job is done and your possessions are all safely in your new property.
