How To Solve the Three Sections of GAMSAT

GAMSAT pattern.

A candidate must score a minimum of 50 marks in each section to pass the test and get an overall passing score. Sounds easy? Students who have taken the test may not think so. The difficulty level of the GAMSAT is high and it is a huge accomplishment even if you score 57-65 overall marks. GAMSAT is divided into three sections. For you to score a good point average smartly, you should prepare according to these three sections.

Section 1; Reasoning in Humanities.

The Section 1 is made to assess your ability to interpret data, read between the lines, and how you tackle qualitative problems. This section determines your communication skills with the patients in hospital wards in your practical life.

This section comprises 62 multiple-choice questions. The time limit is 100 minutes. You can give each question 90 seconds and still be left with 7 minutes to recheck. Divide your time smartly.

For this section, focus on the following areas of disciplines.

  • Psychology.
  • Literature.
  • Graphic comics.
  • Anthropology.

This section is the easiest portion of the test for most students. Time management is also easy for this section hence, students gain the most marks from this section.

Section 2; Written Communication.

Section 2 assesses your ability to think critically and present it in an effective written expression. This section will assess and show how you reflect your ideas in written form.

This section comprises two questions. Each question requires you to write an essay. The time limit is 60 minutes.

Most students find this section difficult due to their slow writing speed or poor written expression. A few tips for this portion are.

  • Increase your writing speed.
  • Increase your reading speed.
  • Manage time such that you still have at least 10 minutes to recheck.
  • Remember that it’s always quality over quantity for this portion of the test.

Although there is no certain word limit, you should write an essay that is at least as long as 500 words.

Section 3; Reasoning in Biological and Physical Sciences.

Section 3 is known to be the most difficult part of the test. It is what makes the GAMSAT very difficult to attempt. This section also assesses the most crucial part of graduate studies which is critical thinking

and analytical skills. What makes the section so tough is stems. These stems contain complex data in different forms and solving this data is quite challenging and time taking.

This section has 75 multiple choice questions and the time limit is 150 minutes. The section consists of the following subjects.

  • Biology.
  • Chemistry.
  • Physicals.

To prepare for this specific portion, many students take additional courses. Personally, I do not believe that the extra course is an unnecessary burden you should not take. Instead, try studying from the PDF booklets available online instead. These updated books have past papers, sample papers, etc. Additionally, there are numerous physics formulas written separately for the ease of the students.
